how to create a timber benchtop extension
You made it. You’re ready to enhance your kitchen with a timber benchtop extension.
Whether you’re after more versatility in your space or looking to introduce a touch of warmth and character, a timber kitchen island extension is a great solution. It can become a cozy spot for a family member to sit and chat while you cook, a place to showcase fresh flowers, or maybe you are just craving that sense of achievement you get from making a kitchen you deserve. Whatever your reason, these step-by-step instructions will guide you through the entire process.
Here’s how you can make it:
step one: install the main benchtop
Begin by installing your primary benchtop as you typically would. Once in place, decide on the dimensions of your timber extension. In our case, we trimmed it to 1810mm long and 355mm wide.
step two: select your timber
After finalising your kitchen measurements, visit your local Bunnings store to choose a benchtop panel – available either off the shelf or via the Special Orders Desk for more customised options.
step three: cut the timber to size
After you receive your timber panel, cut it down to your required length and width. In our case, we trimmed it to 1810mm long and 355mm wide.
step four: prepare the underside support pieces
Now it’s time to cut and attach the support strips under the benchtop. We used a strip of our american oak benchtop, cut to 1810mm in length and 100mm in width. Then, measure and cut a piece for the short side – ours was 255mm long, adjusted to accommodate the existing 100mm strip. Secure both pieces in place using appropriate screws to ensure a stable and durable extension.
step five: install the extension
With the underside supports in place, position the benchtop extension onto your regular kitchen bench. Ensure the extension is placed hard up against the primary benchtop, and then secure it using screws to ensure its firmly attached.
YOU MADE IT.
Step back and applaud your efforts – you’ve just made a beautiful and functional kitchen addition!
