how to choose the right appliances for your kitchen
Choosing the right appliances for your new kitchen is something that can be done throughout the planning and designing stages.
Use our appliance checklist below to help guide you through the process of selecting appliances for your kitchen based on style and functionality.
Sink
If you’re building a new home, you have the luxury of deciding where you want to place your sink. If you’re renovating and have existing plumbing in place then it might be easier to maintain the location of your sink to avoid any unnecessary expenses that come along with relocating plumbing!
Once the location for your sink is decided, you can then pick your sink. Something to keep in mind is your overall sink size. When it comes to the size of your kitchen, a large kitchen suits a large double sink bowl with a drying rack, whereas a small apartment-style kitchen is better suited to a single sink bowl with a drying rack. The next thing to consider is the cabinet you’ll be housing your sink in—your sink should be positioned over a large enough cabinet. You'll also need to allow enough room for the bowls of the sink to fit into your cabinet alongside any plumbing pipes.
Note: cabinets should not be cut to allow for sink bowls as this will compromise their structural integrity.
Rangehood
There are a variety of different rangehood styles for you to consider depending on how much space you’ve allocated for a rangehood to fit into your design. Be bold and make a statement by displaying a large canopy rangehood, or for a streamline concealed finish—use our 600/900mm rangehood cabinets with an under-mount rangehood.
Cooktop
This all comes down to cooking preference and availability of gas on-site. Nowadays, the difference between the performance of a gas and electric cooktop is very subtle. Electric or induction cooktops are really easy to clean, which is why people generally install these cooktops in rental properties. If you prefer to stick to gas and have existing gas installed on the premises then there are also quite a few designs to choose from.
Oven
Similar to choosing a cooktop, this also comes down to personal preference and availability of gas on-site. Another important thing to consider is the size of the oven—think about the size of your space and how much room you have to play with, also consider how often you cook. A great way to get consistency with your oven and cooktop is to match their sizes. So, your 900mm oven is partnered with a 900mm cooktop and vice versa!
Dishwasher
Dishwashers typically come in 600mm widths and are freestanding between two base cabinet end panels. Match the colour or finish or your dishwasher with the rest of your appliances, or for a more streamlined look, try fully integrating your dishwasher with our cabinet doors. Fridge
The size of your fridge opening in your kitchen should be based on whether or not you have an existing fridge to fit into that space and also on the overall size of your planned kitchen. Just like a freestanding dishwasher, match the colour or finish of your fridge with the rest of your appliances and make sure you leave some extra space in your design to fit your fridge in.
Microwave
Microwaves are versatile items, you can place them pretty much anywhere—on your benchtop or even inside a cabinet. But if you’re looking for a sleek finish in your kitchen, then our kaboodle microwave box is a great way to make your microwave a feature. It’s usually used within our oven tower configurations, but can also be partnered with our 600mm 1 drawer cabinets to provide a convenient under bench cooking solution!
